typing
- 1The activity of entering text or data by pressing the keys of a keyboard.
His typing improved dramatically once he learned to touch-type.

Note
The noun covers the manual typewriter as readily as the computer. Howard Johnston, remembering a colleague in RAIL in 2023, recalls "the ferocious nature of his typing, on a manual machine of course," loud enough to hear down the corridor. The word readily takes a possessive and adjectives of manner or skill, as in his ferocious typing or her quick, accurate typing, so it can describe how someone types as well as the activity itself.
- 2Present participle of type.
The journalist was typing furiously to meet the deadline.
They are typing up the meeting notes right now.
Note
One spelling does two grammatical jobs. After be it forms the progressive (she is typing). As a gerund it fills a noun slot but still takes a direct object (typing the report took an hour). That gerund comes close to the noun for keyboard work. The test is the object: in typing letters it is the verb, while in his fast typing it is the noun.
- 3The process of sorting or classifying something according to its type.
The lab's typing of tissue samples ensures donors and recipients match.
Genetic typing can reveal which variety of plant a seed will grow into.
