   A country name that keeps its article. The full name is the United Arab Emirates, and the short form carries the with it: writers say Saudi Arabia and the UAE, not Saudi Arabia and UAE. Underneath, the name is plural, and that can show in the grammar. George H. W. Bush and Brent Scowcroft write that the UAE followed suit, then that they asked for aerial tankers.

   Note

   A crash message from 16-bit Windows that has passed out of use along with the system. It was what users saw when a Win16 program failed beyond saving. It is spoken letter by letter, so it takes a: a UAE. It counts like any other noun, so repeated failures are UAEs. Outside a computing context, readers will take the same letters for the Gulf country.

   A program's name rather than a common noun. The letters stand for an emulator, software that makes one machine behave like another. Here, a Unix system imitates an Amiga. Unix is the operating system descended from Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson's original code, and it names the platform the emulator was written to run on. In running text the name usually takes the article, the UAE, the way a particular product is singled out.
