updating
- 1The act of making something current by adding new information or correcting what has fallen out of date.
The updating of the museum's catalog revealed several misattributed paintings.
Frequent updating of the schedule ensures passengers see the latest departure times.
Similarrevision, modernization
Note
Besides its mass use (the updating of the catalog), the noun also counts. Charles E. Curran's The Origins of Moral Theology in the United States (1997) says later manuals "went through many revisions and updatings." The plural treats each round of changes as a separate event, and it pairs naturally with revision. When you mean the new information or version itself, the noun update names it. Updating names the work of making it.
- 2Present participle of update.
The team is updating the database to fix the broken records.
Engineers are updating the firmware on thousands of devices this week.
Note
The -ing form does two jobs: the progressive (is updating) and the gerund, which keeps its direct object, as in updating the database rather than updating of it. Because update is transitive in both of its verb senses, the object can be a thing or a person: updating the records, or updating the team on recent developments. Add an article and of, and the same spelling becomes the noun for the act.
