upgraded
- 1Improved or enhanced compared with an earlier version, often with added features or better performance.
Like a house after a renovation: the same place, but with newer fittings and more comfort.
The upgraded software loads in half the time and crashes far less often.
Passengers in the upgraded cabins enjoyed extra legroom and free meals.
Similarimproved, enhanced, better
Oppositedowngraded, standard, outdated
Note
A participle turned adjective, and it keeps a participle's logic: it names a state reached, not a degree, so it takes no more or most. A cabin is upgraded or it is not. Placed before a noun (the upgraded software), it is plainly the adjective. After be (the cabin was upgraded), it is hard to tell from the past participle in a passive, and usually the difference does not matter.
- 2Simple past and past participle of upgrade.
The company upgraded its servers to handle the surge in traffic.
All passengers were upgraded to business class after the long delay.
Note
One spelling does both jobs: the simple past (the company upgraded its servers) and the participle after have or be (has upgraded, were upgraded). Because upgrade is mostly transitive, the passive comes easily. People and things get upgraded, often with to naming the better thing. The intransitive use also survives, for whatever improves its own condition or moves to a later version of a program.
