values
- 1Plural of value.
The spreadsheet displayed the recorded values in two neat columns.
Their shared values helped the small community pull together.
Note
One spelling does two jobs here. Values is both the plural noun and the present-tense verb, and the grammar separates them: her values versus she values. As a noun it gathers several plurals: moral principles, fair equivalents in money or goods, a musician's note lengths, and a painter's lights and darks. The 'degree of importance' sense stays uncountable, so it has no plural.
- 2Third-person singular simple present of value.
The company values its long-term customers and rewards their loyalty.
My grandmother values every handwritten letter she receives.
Note
The -s ending signals a single third-person subject in the present tense: the company values, but the companies value. The form carries both sides of the verb. One side is cool appraisal, judging what something is worth. The other is warm regard, holding something dear. Context decides which is meant, so an appraiser who values a painting may not cherish it at all.
