variations
- 1Plural of variation.
The composer wrote a dozen variations on a single simple theme.
Seasonal variations in temperature affect how quickly the lake freezes.
Note
A regular plural, but one that does real work. The singular variation usually behaves as a mass noun (there is little variation in the results), so the plural is how English counts separate instances. Two prepositions split the uses: variations in something are differences it shows, as in temperature or a hereditary trait; variations on something are new versions made from it, as with a musical theme or a line of play.
