verified
Noun pluralverifieds
Pluralverifieds
- 1Simple past and past participle of verify.
Researchers verified the findings through several independent trials.
The signature was verified by a handwriting expert before the contract was signed.
Note
The past form of a verb that always takes an object, so it moves easily into the passive: the signature was verified, the findings have been verified. With have it builds the perfect, and with be the passive. The verb's formal, legal meaning carries over as well. A statement the witness verified is one affirmed under oath, not merely checked.
- 2Capable of being confirmed as true or accurate through a process of checking.
Scientists prefer verified data that other teams can independently reproduce.
The committee accepted only verified figures in the final budget proposal.
Similarconfirmed, validated, proven, checked
Oppositeunverified, unconfirmed, unsubstantiated
Note
An adjective without degrees: something is verified or it is not, and nobody is "more verified" than anyone else. It describes something that has already passed a check, which sets it apart from verifiable, the word for what could be checked. Placed before a noun it marks a status, as in verified cardholders or verified figures, and that status often decides who qualifies.
- 3A user of Twitter, now X, whose identity the company has checked and confirmed.
As a verified, he gained access to features ordinary users never saw.
Several verifieds complained when the badge system was overhauled.
Note
Internet slang that turns the adjective into a person: a verified, plural verifieds. It grows out of the "confirmed" adjective by dropping the noun it once modified, as in a verified user. Keep it to informal talk about the platform. In ordinary writing, verified user or verified account is clearer, and readers outside that online world will recognize it.
