versioning
- 1The use of versions to distinguish between similar items, typically by assigning each one a distinct label or number.
Like the editions of a book, where each printing carries a number marking how it differs from the last.
The studio relies on careful versioning to keep its many draft scripts from getting mixed up.
Their versioning scheme assigns a fresh number every time the shared document changes.
Note
A computing term for keeping successive states of a file, program or record instead of overwriting them, so that changes can be tracked and an earlier state restored. In database work it is weighed against locking: Longley and colleagues' Geographic Information Systems and Science (2005) offers optimistic versioning as the alternative to pessimistic locking. It is usually uncountable, though the plural versionings does occur.
