victories
- 1Plural of victory.
A string of narrow victories carried the party into government.
Their early victories on the battlefield lifted the soldiers' morale.
Note
Only the countable side of the noun pluralizes. Victories are separate wins, counted one by one, while the uncountable state of having won has no plural. The spelling follows the regular rule for a consonant plus y. In art the word can also mean several images of the Roman goddess Victory, usually shown as winged women.
- 2Third-person singular simple present indicative of victory.
Note
Behind this form is a verb that has long dropped out of use. Victory as a transitive verb meaning "to defeat" is rare and obsolete. It takes a direct object (the army victories its foe), and it is spelled exactly like the everyday plural noun, which is almost always what a modern reader meets. In current writing, "defeats" or "triumphs over" does the job.
