views
- 1Plural of view.
The hotel room offers stunning views of the harbor.
Their political views differ on almost every issue.
Note
The plural carries only the countable meanings of view. Scenery pluralizes easily, as in views of the harbor or mountain views. So does the web-page and video sense, where each viewing by a user counts as one view and a clip collects views. The senses of perception, of looking and of range of vision stay singular in practice: something comes into view, never into views.
- 2Third-person singular simple present of view.
She views the gallery's new exhibit every Friday afternoon.
The committee views the latest proposal with considerable caution.
Note
The -s form shares its spelling with the plural noun, so only the sentence tells them apart: she views is a verb, the views is a noun. Both meanings of the verb are transitive and need an object. The 'regard' meaning also needs its stated way spelled out, usually with as or with: he views the plan as reckless, the board views it with suspicion.
