voided
- 1Past tense and past participle of void.
The judge voided the election results after finding widespread fraud.
The nurse noted that the patient had voided twice since surgery.
Note
Its two main settings take different constructions. In law and business it needs an object, such as a check, a warranty or a result, and turns up in the passive too (the warranty was voided); in clinical notes it often stands alone, with the bladder understood (the patient voided). The older senses of emptying or leaving a place are obsolete.
- 2Of a charge on a coat of arms: with the center cut out, leaving only its outline.
The arms show a black lozenge voided, its center revealing the gold field beneath.
Carved above the doorway were the founder's arms, a chevron voided between three roses.
Note
Blazon puts the word after its noun, as it does with heraldic adjectives generally: a cross voided, a chevron voided. Only the outline of the charge is left, so the field shows through the middle, and a red cross voided on a silver shield reads as a red frame around silver.
