waged
SayWAYJD/weɪd͡ʒd/
- 1Simple past and past participle of wage.
Rebel groups waged a guerrilla campaign across the northern provinces.
The conflict was waged with little regard for civilian lives.
Note
One regular -ed form does both jobs: they waged war (past), and the war was waged (participle, here passive). The living meaning is carrying on a war or contest, so its natural objects are war, campaign and struggle. Older uses (betting, hazarding a danger, hiring someone for pay) are now obsolete, though they still echo in wager and wages.
