warned
WORND/wɔɹnd/UKWAWND/wɔːnd/
- 1Simple past and past participle of warn.
She warned her colleagues that the deadline could not be moved.
Residents had been warned to evacuate hours before the flood arrived.
Note
One regular -ed spelling does two jobs: the plain past (she warned them) and the participle after have or be (they had been warned). The passive comes easily because the person alerted is the natural object. Someone is warned of danger, warned against rash behavior, or warned away from a place. Older English, now obsolete, even let a clock warn: it clicked or whirred just before striking the hour.
