Origin
From Middle English Wednesday, an i-mutated form going back to unrecorded Old English *wēdnesdæġ (beside wōdnesdæġ) and Proto-West Germanic *Wōdinas dag, a variant of *Wōdanas dag, literally "Woden's day." It is a calque of Latin diēs Mercuriī ("day of Mercury") and Greek "day of Hermes," made by associating the god Odin (Woden) with Mercury and Hermes. It is cognate with Dutch woensdag and Swedish onsdag.
