weeps
SayWEEPS/wiːps/
- 1Third-person singular simple present indicative of weep.
He weeps quietly at the back of the church during the funeral service.
The cut weeps clear fluid for a day or two before it scabs over.
Note
The -s form carries every use of the verb, not only tears. A singular subject that cries takes it (she weeps for joy), and so does a wound that oozes, a wall that runs with drops, or a willow whose branches droop. One use has faded: weeps with a direct object, meaning "bewails" (she weeps her loss), is now obsolete. Modern English adds a preposition instead: she weeps over her loss.
