wished
WISHT/wɪʃt/
- 1Simple past and past participle of wish.
He wished he had spoken up during the meeting.
They wished us well as we set off on the journey.
Note
One regular -ed form does both jobs: the simple past (she wished for rain) and the participle after have (she had wished for rain), which also appears in passives. Watch what follows it. For something that did not or cannot happen, the clause shifts back (wished he had spoken). The giving use takes two objects (wished us well, wished them luck). Older English could follow it with may or a subjunctive.
