witched
SayWICHT/wɪt͡ʃt/
- 1Past tense and past participle of witch.
Before the well was drilled, a neighbor had witched for water along the fence line.
The villagers swore the stranger had witched their children with a single look.
Note
Dowsing and spell-casting share this past form, and the construction tells them apart. Someone who witched for water was dowsing, and no object follows; someone who witched a person or a herd had bewitched them, and the participle turns up in passives such as the cattle were witched. Using it to mean simply practicing witchcraft is obsolete.
