witnessed
SayWIT-nist/ˈwɪtnəst/
- 1Simple past and past participle of witness.
Investigators interviewed everyone who witnessed the robbery.
The contract was witnessed by two impartial observers.
Note
A regular -ed form, so one spelling does two jobs: she witnessed the crash (past), and the crash was witnessed (participle). The passive is most at home in the legal sense, where a document is witnessed when someone watches it being signed and adds a signature to vouch for it. The religious sense, giving personal testimony, takes no object and so has no passive at all.
