worths
- 1Plural of worth.
Both candidates disclosed their net worths in the required financial filings.
Over the decade, the net worths of the company's founders soared.
Note
Only one meaning of the noun really takes a plural: worth as value, counted out when separate values are set side by side, as in the relative worths of two offers. Worth as merit stays a mass noun, and so does worth as the amount produced in a stretch of time. That is why English says three days' worth, never three days' worths.
- 2Third-person singular simple present indicative of worth.
Note
A relic of a verb that has dropped out of the language: the obsolete worth meaning "to be, to become, to betide." The living worth in worth ten dollars or worth the wait is an adjective, so it never takes -s. English says it is worth it, never it worths it. On a modern page, worths is almost always the plural noun.
