wrote
- 1Past tense of write.
He wrote three novels before he turned thirty.
The committee wrote a detailed report on the findings.
Note
A form that needs no helper verb: she wrote, they wrote it down. When have comes in, standard English switches to written (she has written), and wrote in that slot is the nonstandard participle. Every use of write carries over unchanged, so you can say you wrote a poem, wrote to a friend, wrote down the instructions, or simply wrote for a living.
- 2Past participle of write (nonstandard; the standard form is written).
They have wrote to the council about the noise twice now.
He has wrote me two emails since Monday.
Note
Once unremarkable in print: Corbyn Morris could write "I have wrote" in 1743. By Charles Dickens it belongs to a character's chatty talk ("to have wrote up to you"). Today it is colloquial and nonstandard, though it still slips into books such as Celeste Snowber's Embodied Prayer. In careful writing, use written after have, has or had. The simple past wrote stays correct on its own.
