yarding
USYARD-ing/ˈjɑɹdɪŋ/UKYAHD-ing/ˈjɑːdɪŋ/
- 1Present participle and gerund of yard.
The crew was yarding logs down the slope toward the landing.
By dawn the stockmen were yarding the last of the herd.
Note
The -ing form carries two quite different verbs. One takes an object and comes from the enclosure: stockmen yarding cattle are driving them into a yard and shutting them in. The other is a joke on the unit of length, as in yarding along rather than inching along, and it takes no object at all. As a gerund the first works like a noun: the yarding of the herd took all morning.
