answered
- 1Simple past and past participle of answer.
The witness answered each charge calmly during the hearing.
By the time the office closed, every email had been answered.
Note
One regular -ed form does double duty: the simple past (she answered at once) and the past participle after have or be (the call has been answered). The passive comes easily because most uses of answer take an object, such as a letter, a charge, the door or the phone. Once the participle settles before a noun, as in an answered prayer, it becomes the adjective meaning 'already replied to'.
- 2Having an answer or reply already given.
With every objection now answered, the proposal moved forward to a vote.
An answered prayer brought the family more comfort than they expected.
