binning
- 1Present participle and gerund of bin.
He's binning the whole plan and starting again from scratch.
Binning the readings into hourly intervals made the trend obvious.
Note
The verb doubles its final n before -ing, as run and sit do. After a form of be it is a participle (she was binning old letters); as a gerund it names the action, and in data work that gerund has hardened into the statistics technique. The throw-away meanings are informal and British; the data meaning carries no such label.
- 2A data pre-processing technique in which values are sorted into small intervals, or bins, and each is replaced by a value representing its interval, often the central one.
We applied binning to the sensor readings before training the model.
Equal-width binning can hide important differences when the data are heavily skewed.

Note
A smoothing step that trades detail for stability: small measurement errors inside one interval vanish, but so do real differences. Bins can share one width or hold equal numbers of values, and the stand-in can be the bin's center, mean or median. A histogram draws on the same bins but counts the values rather than replacing them.

- 4The process of combining the charge from neighboring pixels of an image sensor during readout.
The astronomer switched on two-by-two binning so the faint nebula would register in a shorter exposure.
On-chip binning trades resolution for sensitivity, which helps when the light is weak.
- 5The process of downscaling a digital image or other array by merging blocks of neighboring elements, using the sum, average, median, minimum, or maximum of each block.
The script applies binning to the satellite images, averaging each four-by-four block of pixels into one.
Median binning of the elevation grid kept isolated spikes from distorting the coarser map.
- 6In metagenomics, the sorting of DNA sequence reads or contigs into groups, each assigned to an operational taxonomic unit.
Binning assigned most of the soil sample's reads to a few dozen operational taxonomic units.
Reference-free binning groups contigs by their sequence composition and coverage.
