boarded
- 1Simple past and past participle of board.
The passengers boarded the ferry as the rain began to fall.
During her first year of college, she boarded with an elderly couple who lived near campus.
Note
A regular form doing two jobs: the simple past (they boarded at noon) and the past participle after have or be (everyone had boarded; the ship was boarded at dawn). Only the meanings that take an object can go into the passive. A ferry or an enemy ship gets boarded, but in the lodging sense, as in boarding with a family, nobody is boarded. An archaic use meant to accost someone.
- 2Made of or covered with wooden boards.
The boarded windows gave the abandoned house a bleak appearance.
Visitors admired the neatly boarded ceiling of the restored hall.
Note
A builder's word, used mostly of the parts of a structure. A boarded roof is sheathed in timber before the tiles go on, and a boarded window is sealed against weather or intruders. Ceilings and floors can be boarded too. It can be graded with more and most, as in a more boarded façade. Before a noun, as in a boarded floor, the spelling belongs to the adjective rather than to the past form of the verb.
