bookmarks
- 1Plural of bookmark.
He saved several bookmarks so he could find his favorite pages again.
The shop sold leather bookmarks stamped with the names of classic authors.
Note
One plural serves three different objects: strips of paper or leather tucked between pages, saved shortcuts to files and web pages, and, in database work, pointers from a nonclustered index to rows in a table. Context does the sorting. The same spelling is also the present-tense verb, so "she bookmarks" and "her bookmarks" differ only in the words around them.
- 2Third-person singular simple present of bookmark.
The browser automatically bookmarks pages you visit most often.
Whenever she finds a useful article, she bookmarks it for later reference.
Note
A transitive verb, so it normally carries its object straight after it: she bookmarks the page, the browser bookmarks it for later. The action is simply making a bookmark, which lets the verb follow the noun into either world. It can mean slipping a marker between pages or saving a shortcut to a file or web address.
