catting
SayKAT-ing/ˈkætɪŋ/
- 1Present participle and gerund of cat.
The crew spent the morning catting the anchor before setting sail.
Rumors spread that he had been catting around the whole season.
Note
The final t doubles before -ing, as in sitting and getting, because cat is a single short syllable. One spelling serves very different trades: a crew catting the anchor up to the cathead, a programmer catting a pair of files, someone out catting all night. The first two take an object, so you cat something. The night-wandering use takes none.
