chocolates
- 1Plural of chocolate.
He arranged the chocolates neatly in the gift box.
These chocolates come in three different flavors.
Note
A plural that belongs only to the countable uses: the small pieces in a box of chocolates, or cats with chocolate-colored coats. The food, the drink and the color are mass nouns, so a recipe calls for some chocolate, not chocolates. The plural can also name distinct varieties, as in a shop selling chocolates from several makers.
- 2Third-person singular simple present indicative of chocolate.
The confectioner chocolates the cherries one by one before they cool.
This machine chocolates each almond in just a few seconds.
Note
A rare verb, and transitive when it means coating food: someone chocolates the cherries, the biscuits, the almonds. Microbiology has its own use, also rare. There it means heating blood agar to burst its red cells, so a technician chocolates a plate of medium. In both uses this form needs a singular subject, and the kitchen sense always takes an object.
