cleaned
- 1Made free of dirt, stains, or impurities; restored to a clean state.
The cleaned wound healed faster than the doctor expected.
Investigators examined the newly cleaned artifacts under bright light.
Note
A participle settled into an adjective, describing a thing by the work done on it: a cleaned wound, cleaned artifacts. It does not grade, so nothing is more cleaned or most cleaned. It records that the cleaning happened, not how clean the result turned out. For degrees of cleanliness, reach for clean itself. Its verbal source is the past participle.
- 2Simple past and past participle of clean.
The volunteers cleaned the beach after the festival.
By the time we arrived, the staff had cleaned every table.
Note
One spelling does three jobs here: the simple past (they cleaned the beach), the perfect with have (had cleaned), and the passive with be (the tables were cleaned). The form carries every meaning of clean, including the specialist ones. A climber who has cleaned a route has taken the gear back out of it. In curling, a player cleans the ice ahead of a moving rock, brushing more lightly than a sweep.
