clicking
- 1Present participle of click.
He was clicking through the slides far too quickly for anyone to follow.
Clicking the wrong link can install malware on your computer.
Note
The verb form behind continuous tenses (she was clicking away) and gerund phrases (clicking a link). Because click can be transitive or intransitive, it may take an object, as in clicking the switch or clicking a website, or stand alone, as when a camera keeps clicking. As a gerund it takes its object directly. The noun for the sound needs of instead: the clicking of her heels.
- 2The brief, sharp sound of a click, or the repeated making of that sound.
Like the rapid tapping of fingernails on glass.
A rhythmic clicking echoed from the old clock on the wall.
The clicking of her heels announced her arrival down the marble hall.
Similarticking, clacking, tapping, clatter
Note
A noun that can be counted as well as heard as a steady stream: it takes a plural, clickings, for separate runs of the sound. Bobby Matherne's The Spizznet File (2001) uses it this way for dolphins, with one pair trading clickings while another trades whistles. The singular suits a continuous sound, as in the clicking of a clock. The plural sets one kind of signal against another.
