Note
The dominant modern sense, and a word with a reported birth: the hippie poet Ed Sanders reportedly coined Mongolian Cluster Fuck around 1965 in the East Village Other. P. J. O'Rourke's Holidays in Hell (1988) calls that phrase journalists' slang for a scripted, news-free event, and Stephen King's The Dark Half (1989) credits the army with the name. Earlier writers split it in two, but by The Crow (1994) it is closed up. It is vulgar slang, so keep it out of formal writing.
