conversations
- 1Plural of conversation.
The two overlapping conversations made the room hard to follow.
Some of her most honest conversations happened on long car rides.
Note
A count plural that numbers separate occasions of talk. The uncountable use of conversation, talk as an activity in general (good conversation, the art of conversation), takes no plural at all. The plural also serves the specialist senses: a fencing bout can hold several conversations of the blades, and computer systems processing a transaction carry on conversations of their own.
- 2Third-person singular simple present indicative of conversation, a rare nonstandard verb use; the usual word is converses.
Note
A verb that shares its spelling with the everyday plural noun. Here it follows he, she, it or a singular subject, and the person addressed is usually introduced with with. The verb itself is nonstandard, so many readers will hear it as a slip for the noun. In casual speech it may pass, but in careful writing talks with is the safer choice.
