converted
- 1Simple past and past participle of convert.
The factory was converted into loft apartments after it closed.
The missionaries converted hundreds of villagers within a single decade.
Note
One regular -ed form does three jobs. It is the simple past (they converted hundreds), the participle in perfect tenses (has converted) and the participle in passives (was converted into lofts). Convert normally takes an object, whether a building, a sum, a unit or a believer, so the passive comes easily. Directly before a noun, with no auxiliary, the same spelling is usually the adjective instead.
- 2Changed in form, function, or use from an original state.
The converted warehouse now houses dozens of small design offices.
She bought a converted school bus and lives in it year-round.

Note
Two very different things can be converted, and the adjective serves both: "a converted Jew, living in a converted chapel." Applied to a building, vehicle or space, it means refitted for a new use. The Economist in 2013 placed banking's future in converted warehouses. Applied to a person, it describes someone who has taken up a new faith. Only the noun beside it tells you which kind of change is meant.
