transformed
- 1Changed so as to have a completely different form or appearance.
The transformed factory now houses art studios and cafes instead of machinery.
Critics praised the transformed character as the most convincing arc of the season.
Similarconverted, changed, altered
Note
A participle that has settled into an adjective and is most at home before a noun: the transformed factory, a transformed man. It does not grade. Something is transformed or it is not, so "more transformed" sounds wrong. After be it can be hard to tell from the verb form. A by-phrase naming who did it (was transformed by new owners) marks the verb, while a description of the result marks the adjective.
- 2Simple past and past participle of transform.
The reforms of the 1990s transformed the country's economy.
His ideas transformed how scientists understood the brain.
Note
One spelling does two jobs. The simple past stands alone (the reforms transformed the economy), and the past participle follows have or be (has transformed, was transformed). Because transform works both with and without an object, the form appears either way, as in the town transformed into a resort. It also carries the verb's technical uses: a cell, a voltage, or a mathematical expression can be transformed.
