correlated
- 1Mutually related through a correlation, so that changes in one quantity tend to go with changes in another.
Researchers found that the two variables were strongly correlated.
Income and life expectancy remain positively correlated across most countries.
Similarrelated, linked, connected, associated
Oppositeuncorrelated, unrelated, independent
Note
A gradable adjective, so it takes degree words: highly correlated, strongly correlated, more correlated, most correlated. In research writing it often justifies leaving a measure out, since two highly correlated variables carry much the same information. It reports that values move together, not that one drives the other. Correlated is not the same claim as caused.
- 2Past tense and past participle of correlate.
The analysts correlated rainfall data with crop yields over a decade.
Historians correlated the letters with events recorded elsewhere.
Note
One spelling does double duty: the simple past (they correlated the records) and the past participle after have or in the passive (the records were correlated). The verb works two ways. Transitively it means bringing things into relation, often paired with with (correlate rainfall with yields). Intransitively it means being related (the figures correlated closely). In is correlated with, this participle shades into the statistical adjective.
