delivered
- 1Simple past and past participle of deliver.
The supplies were delivered to the shelter overnight.
Voters delivered a clear message at the polls last week.
Note
One spelling does two jobs, as with every regular verb: the past tense (the courier delivered it) and the participle that follows have or be (it has been delivered, it was delivered). The passive keeps older meanings alive: a city delivered from danger, a mother delivered of a child. There, of marks what she is freed from, echoing the verb's sense of disburdening.
- 2That has been, or will be, brought or handed over in a particular, specified manner.
The delivered cost of the lumber includes freight to the job site.
Customers can track the status of their delivered orders online.
Note
A trade word that rarely stands alone: it heads fixed phrases naming how goods reach the buyer and who carries the cost along the way, as in delivered duty paid or delivered ex ship. In these terms it describes the price or the contract, not the parcel. A delivered price can be quoted long before anything ships, which is why the meaning covers what will be delivered as well as what has been.
