effected
- 1Simple past and past participle of effect.
The committee effected a complete overhaul of the voting system.
Reforms were effected only after years of sustained public pressure.
Note
One regular spelling serves both forms: the past (the committee effected change) and the participle (change was effected). The real trap is affected. To effect a change is to bring it about; to affect a change is only to influence one. Effected is often written by mistake where affected is meant. If "influenced" fits the sentence, the word you want is affected.
- 2Modified by audio effects, such as those added by pedals, processors, or filters that reshape the original sound.
Like a voice heard through an echoing hall instead of a quiet, bare room.
The effected vocals shimmered with reverb and delay throughout the chorus.
Producers layered the dry signal beneath an effected version for added depth.
Oppositedry, unprocessed, clean
Note
A studio and stage word for a guitar or voice that has been run through effects, as opposed to the dry, untreated signal. Degree is shown with adverbs, not comparatives. John Joseph Thompson's Raised by Wolves (2000) writes of "heavily effected guitars", never "more effected". It looks like a slip for affected, but the spelling is deliberate here: the noun effects, turned into an adjective.
