firmed
SayFURMDUS/fɜɹmd/UK/fɜːmd/
- 1Simple past and past participle of firm.
Crude prices firmed slightly after the supply report came out.
The custard had firmed by the time the guests arrived.
Note
Because firm works both with and without an object, the participle splits its duties. Intransitive uses take have in the perfect, as when prices recover, a custard sets or Australian betting odds shorten (the market has firmed). Only the transitive uses, where someone fixes or compacts something, can turn passive: the soil was firmed around the roots.
