flavored
UK spellingflavoured
- 1Having a particular taste, often because flavoring has been added.
The cafe sells several flavored coffees, but most regulars still order theirs black.
Children take cherry-flavored cough syrup far more willingly than the plain kind.
Oppositeplain, unflavored
Note
The adjective often works as the second half of a compound that names the taste: grape-flavored soda, cherry-flavored syrup, hyphenated before the noun. Such a label promises a taste, not an ingredient. A grape-flavored soda may owe everything to artificial flavoring, and real grape juice tastes much richer; when the fruit itself is in the drink, a careful writer says so.
- 2Simple past and past participle of flavor.
The baker flavored the icing with almond extract.
The tea was lightly flavored with bergamot oil.
Note
A regular verb form, made by adding -ed to flavor, that serves as both past tense and past participle. Because the verb is transitive, the past tense takes an object: the baker flavored the icing. After be, the participle can blur into the adjective. With a with-phrase or an agent it reads as passive, and standing alone it reads as plain description.
