formulae
- 1Plural of formula.
The textbook lists all the relevant formulae in an appendix.
Chemists rely on structural formulae to represent molecules.
Note
The Latin ending survives here alongside the regularized English plural formulas, and both are correct. The -ae form predominates in mathematical and scientific writing, where it names symbolic rules and the structural formulae of chemistry. It also serves every other sense of the singular: methods, prescribed mixtures, set phrases and statements of doctrine. Whichever plural you choose, keep to it within one piece of writing.
