harming
USHARM-ing/ˈhɑɹmɪŋ/UKHAHM-ing/ˈhɑːmɪŋ/
- 1Present participle and gerund of harm.
Pollution is slowly harming the coral reefs along the coast.
He apologized for harming her reputation with the rumor.
Note
One spelling does two jobs. After a form of be it is a participle, building the progressive (pollution is harming the reefs). After a preposition, or as a subject, it is a gerund: a noun that still takes a direct object (apologized for harming her reputation). That object is what separates it from the noun harm, which needs to instead: harming the reefs, but harm to the reefs.
