helped
HELPT/hɛlpt/
- 1Simple past and past participle of help.
The volunteers helped rebuild several homes after the flood.
He was helped to his feet by a passing stranger.
Note
One spelling does both jobs: the regular past (they helped) and the participle after have or be (they have helped; he was helped). The table meaning keeps its to in the passive, so a guest is helped to more soup much as someone is helped to their feet. The 'refrain from' meaning rarely surfaces in this form, because it travels with can: the past is couldn't help it, not helped it.
