helps
- 1Third-person singular simple present of help.
The new software helps employees track their hours more accurately.
Regular exercise helps the body recover from stress.
Note
The -s form is used only with a singular third-person subject in the present: she helps, the software helps. Most of help's uses carry over, including the table idiom, as in he helps himself to the bread. The 'refrain' use does not, because it follows can and a modal takes the bare verb: can't help laughing, never can't helps. In Hong Kong and Singapore English, helps can also mean doing something on someone's behalf.
- 2Plural of help.
The publisher offers teaching helps with each textbook.
These guides served as valuable helps to first-time travelers.
Note
Most uses of help resist a plural, since the noun is usually uncountable: you get help, not helps. The plural appears where help names a particular aid, especially a study aid, as in a set of study helps. Even when help means the people employed in a house or on a farm, it stays a mass noun. A household's staff are the help, not the helps.
