hummed
SayHUMD/hʌmd/
- 1Simple past and past participle of hum.
He hummed along to the radio as he drove home.
The crowd had hummed with excitement long before the band appeared.
Note
The doubled m is the one quirk in an otherwise regular form: the short vowel of hum keeps its sound because the consonant doubles before -ed. Past tense and participle share this spelling, but only the transitive use, humming a tune, yields a passive, as in a melody hummed under the breath. British slang also lets the same form mean that something smelled bad.
