influencer
Pluralinfluencers
- 1A person who can sway the consumption, lifestyle, or political choices of an online audience by creating social media content, often as part of a marketing campaign.
Like a trusted local shopkeeper whose word once decided what a whole town bought, now scaled to millions through a phone screen.
A travel influencer can fill a small hotel simply by recommending it to her audience.
Political campaigns now hire influencers to reach younger voters online.
Note
Marketing turned the plain agent noun into a job title, and the job now comes in sizes. The word also works before other nouns, as in influencer economy. Its opposite is deinfluencer.
- 2A person or thing that exerts influence on the thinking, behavior, or development of someone or something.
