Plurallistings

8 meanings of listing

Practice

  1. 1
    nouncountable
A single entry in a directory or list, such as one advertising a business or a property for sale.

Their house sold within a week of the listing going up online.

The directory includes listings for every licensed plumber in the county.

    Similarentry, record, advertisement

  2. 2
    noununcountable
The act of entering items in a list, or of placing something on an official register or record.

The listing of the species as endangered required years of scientific review.

Accurate listing of ingredients on food packages is required by law.

    Similarregistration, inclusion, enumeration, recording

    Oppositeremoval, exclusion

  3. 3
    verb
Present participle and gerund of list.

The auctioneer was listing the items one by one before the sale began.

Listing your goals at the start of the year can help you stay focused.

    Note

One spelling carries a crowd of verbs. Most often it belongs to the compiler (listing the items, listing a house for sale), but the same -ing form serves a ship listing heavily to one side, strips of cloth sewn into a striped border, ground worked with a lister (see the ploughing noun), and, in the Southern US, land hoed into alternating beds and alleys for cotton. The object usually tells you which verb you are reading.

  4. 4
    nouncountable
An entry on the register of securities that an exchange has accepted for trading and quotation.

The startup's listing on the Nasdaq raised over a billion dollars.

Foreign companies often seek a secondary listing in London or Hong Kong to reach more investors.

    Oppositedelisting

    Note

Finance narrows the directory entry to one particular register, the exchange's. A company has a listing, gains one or loses one, and the usual phrasing names the place: a listing on the stock exchange, a secondary listing in another market. Keeping it means meeting the exchange's disclosure and governance standards. Losing it is called delisting, a word worth knowing because news reports use it far more often than the longer phrase.

  5. 5
    nouncountable
The physical form of a single item in a list, such as a printed entry occupying its own place on the page.

The phone book's pages were so worn that each listing was hard to read.

He tore a single listing from the catalog and slipped it into his pocket.

    Similarentry

    Note

Here the listing is something you can pick up: a sheet or card for one item, kept in a stack with one per house or one per product. Having a physical form is what separates it from a line in a directory, which exists only as text on a page or screen. Because each one is a separate object, it takes counting and handing-over language naturally: the second listing, pass me that listing.

  6. 6
    nouncountable
A printout of a computer program or of a data set.

The programmer spread the listing across her desk to trace the bug by hand.

Early computer magazines published listings that readers could type in themselves.

    Similarprintout

    Note

The programmer's sense: the whole program or data set rendered on paper, line by line, so it can be read away from the machine. Historically these came off line printers and were marked up by hand during debugging. The usual construction is a listing of something (a listing of the latest version), and you print or run off a listing rather than write one.

  7. 7
    adjective
Stated or shown on a listing, as with a price or agent named in the published entry.

The buyers offered well below the listing price and waited for a counteroffer.

The listing agent scheduled three showings for Saturday afternoon.

    Similarasking

  8. 8
    noununcountable
The act of plowing with a lister, a plow that throws soil to both sides and leaves a deep furrow.

After the listing was done, the crew planted sorghum in the bottoms of the furrows.

Listing leaves ridges that shelter young plants from the wind.
