logicking
- 1A disparaging term for the use of logic or for logical thinking.
Like the sneer in calling someone a "walking calculator": the skill is real, but the word mocks it.
Her cold logicking won the debate but lost her the room's sympathy.
He reduced every moral question to dry logicking, ignoring how people actually felt.
Similarpedantry, hair-splitting, rationalizing
Note
A word that can carry a sneer but does not always: it often mocks reasoning pursued for its own sake and cut off from feeling. John Lord in The Christian philosopher and metaphysician (1852) prays to be delivered from "such logic, such logicking, and such logickers." Note the k: logic plus -ing takes one so the c stays hard, as in panicking.
- 2Present participle and gerund of logic.
Note
The verb behind it is used in two ways. Without an object it is usually disparaging: someone logicking away is reasoning too much or in the wrong place. With an object it is neutral, meaning to reason something through, or to argue a person into defeat. As a gerund it is spelled exactly like the noun for logical thinking, so context decides which you are reading.
