mentions
- 1Third-person singular simple present of mention.
The report mentions several risks that the board should address.
Whenever the subject comes up, she mentions her year abroad.
Note
The -s ending marks agreement with a singular subject: the report mentions, she mentions. With I, you, we or they the plain mention returns. The form carries both senses of the verb. One is a passing reference, like a report that mentions risks. The other is narrower: citing a word to talk about the word itself, as when a sentence mentions "cat" rather than using it.
- 2Plural of mention.
The brand counted hundreds of mentions during the campaign.
Honorable mentions went to three other contestants.
Note
A plural that has grown a meaning of its own online: your mentions are the feed of replies and posts that name you. In that use the word appears only in the plural, so you check your mentions, never your mention. Elsewhere it simply counts separate references, as in honorable mentions. The same spelling also serves as the present-tense verb, as in she mentions it.
