muffins
- 1Plural of muffin.
She arranged the blueberry muffins in a neat row on the tray.
Fresh muffins sold out within an hour at the farmers market.
Note
The plural covers two quite different baked goods. In British use muffins are flattish buns, split, toasted and buttered. The other kind are cupcake-shaped and eaten mainly at breakfast. They are sometimes glazed but usually unfrosted, which separates them from cupcakes, a dessert. The same spelling also serves as the verb form: three muffins is the noun, and she muffins is the verb.
- 2Third-person singular simple present indicative of muffin.
Note
One spelling carries several constructions. With no object it means eating muffins or swelling up like one, as when dough muffins over a pan's rim. With an object it means feeding muffins to someone or shaping something like one. The presence of an object tells you which meaning is in play. Like any regular verb, it takes the -s only after he, she, it or a singular noun.
