notes
- 1Plural of note.
The student's notes filled three pages by the end of the lecture.
Detectives compared their notes after interviewing the last witness.
Note
One spelling, two jobs. As a noun it is the plural of every kind of note: marginal comments, memoranda, short informal letters, distinctive marks. The same letters also serve as the present-tense verb, and the word just before usually tells them apart. A determiner (the notes, her notes) signals the noun. A singular subject (the report notes) signals the verb.
- 2Third-person singular simple present of note.
The report notes several errors in the original data set.
Our guide notes that the trail becomes steep near the summit.
Note
A present-tense reporting verb whose -s ending marks a singular subject: he, she, it, the report, our guide. Every sense of the verb is transitive, so something always follows. It may be a direct object (notes several errors) or a that-clause (notes that the trail becomes steep). With a plural subject the bare form returns: the reports note.
