objected
Sayuhb-JEK-tid/əbˈd͡ʒɛktɪd/
- 1Simple past and past participle of object.
Several residents objected to the rezoning proposal at the public hearing.
The line of questioning was objected to by the defense attorney.
Note
The modern verb takes its complaint with to, and that preposition stays attached even in the passive: residents objected to the plan; the plan was objected to. Older English could also object a charge directly, laying it against someone as an accusation or reproach. That transitive use is now obsolete, so today the thing opposed needs to in front of it.
